Five years ago, the extent of my exercise program was a brisk walk on the weekends. My cholesterol was high, my weight was rapidly increasing and my energy level, which was always high, was rapidly decreasing. I was referred by a friend to check out CrossFit Nine7. At first, I was totally overwhelmed and intimidated. I thought to myself “I’d never be able to do these things” and “CrossFit was NOT for me”. Putting my doubts aside, I took a chance and signed up for the foundations course. The classes were very challenging and my body was sore like never before. I didn’t give up though, with the constant encouragements of the coaches and other athletes I stuck with it and have been part of this incredible family ever since. Although I haven’t mastered everything yet, each day I am improving at my own pace with the guidance of the coaches.
At 58, I decided to try something different. I walked into CrossFit nine7 (at the time CrossFit Great Neck) and it was love at first bite! As time passed, my knees started to fail me, however, this was NOT due to CrossFit but instead to my lifetime running addiction (1989 New York Marathon) water & snow skiing, high school sports, etc. Also, I’m a heavy dude weighing at 260 pounds, always have been. To add to the knee issue, in April 2014 I had a Stroke and while in the hospital a pacemaker was placed above my heart. The pacemaker has been a nightmare since. After the placement of the pacemaker, I returned to the gym, which helped but then another challenge arose,
It was around two years ago when I joined CrossFit Nine7, and since then it has truly been a life changing experience. From the first moment I walked in, I was welcomed by other members with friendly introductions and warm greetings. Quickly after, I got to meet the coaches and staff and never looked back again.
Before I joined Nine7, I had spent a little over a year doing CrossFit at a different box, so I had good foundations to begin with. A few months after I joined Nine7, I started to notice significant improvements with my mobility, endurance and strength.
I started my journey at Nine7 differently than most. I did not walk through the front door; I was injured. My knee, which had an ACL/MCL repair back in 1992, cartilage repairs and cleanups through the years and is now surrounded by arthritis, was severely inflamed and the only recommendation I was receiving, was to begin injections to help with spacing to alleviate the pain. Also, being 6’5” and 50 years old, my back has had its share of pain and I knew that every several years it would “go out” and I would be bed ridden for many days while it slowly calmed down. Athletics have always been a part of who I am. When I was four years old I started swimming on a swim team and from the beginning I loved the challenge of athletics and competition. In high school I played four varsity sports soccer, basketball, swimming and track and in college I played soccer and was all-American in swimming. But after graduating college, I felt like a part of me was missing, I missed the trials of physical exertion, the spirit of teamwork and the sense of accomplishment found on the athletic field and in the pool.
